01 / Understanding Clinical Supervision

Good practice needs
space for reflection.

Clinical supervision is a structured, collaborative professional process that supports practitioners in reflecting on their work with clients.

It provides opportunities to examine ethical considerations, therapeutic relationships, clinical decision-making, professional boundaries and practitioner wellbeing.

Supervision is not simply a performance review or a checklist of professional obligations. It is also a place to develop professional judgement, recognise strengths and reflect on areas for further learning.

At SHM, supervision is guided by respect, professional accountability and attention to the individual supervisee’s context and experience.

The following table summarises annual minimum supervision hours for common membership categories. Membership renewal and registration upgrade requirements are not necessarily the same.

ACA Level 3 10 hours Per ACA membership year.
ACA Level 4 10 hours Per ACA membership year.
PACFA Certified Practising (formerly Provisional) 10–15 hours Normally 10 hours; 15 hours at the higher client-contact threshold.
PACFA Registered Clinical 10–15 hours Normally 10 hours; 15 hours at the higher client-contact threshold.
PACFA Certified Supervisor 15 hours Annual supervisor requirement.
Student / Placement Course-specific Follow your course, placement and supervisor eligibility rules.
Important ACA/PACFA Group Supervision Notice

PACFA generally recognises small-group supervision with 2–6 supervisees. ACA-aligned groups may include up to 10 supervisees per eligible supervisor.

A group with 10 participants should not be assumed to meet PACFA requirements. Participants must check the supervisor’s eligibility, group format and acceptable hours for their registration category.

For PACFA renewal, guidance for 2026 generally lists 10 hours below 400 client-contact hours and 15 hours at 400 or more. Some PACFA guidance differs at the exact threshold of 400 hours; confirm your own member requirements.

For upgrading to PACFA Registered Clinical, at least 75 post-qualification supervision hours may be required, with at least 50% individual supervision. This is an upgrade requirement, not an annual minimum.

ACA also places restrictions on how supervision hours may be accumulated in sessions or blocks. A 120-minute group session is not automatically fully creditable for every member.

Check the latest official requirements: ACA · PACFA CPD & Supervision . Only the relevant professional association can confirm whether particular hours count toward your requirements.
