About SAM – SHM Mascot
Say hello to SAM, the official mascot of Smiling Hearts And Minds (SHM) and the caring leader of Brainbow Buddies. Inspired by the name and values of Smiling Hearts And Minds, SAM is a colourful little friend with a meaningful purpose: to remind us that wellbeing is about caring for the whole person, not just one part of who we are.
With a vibrant brain-shaped head, colourful rays, protective heart-shaped leaves and a special Feelings Wheel, SAM represents the connections between our thoughts, emotions, physical experiences, relationships, personal values and sense of meaning.
SAM brings SHM’s commitment to compassion, dignity, understanding and holistic wellbeing to life through imagination, creativity and storytelling.
SAM’s message is simple: Every person is unique. Every feeling matters. Every part of our wellbeing deserves care.
SAM’s Philosophy — Caring for the Whole Person
Holistic Care & Wellbeing
At Smiling Hearts And Minds, we recognise that people are more than their symptoms, challenges or difficult experiences.
Our wellbeing is influenced by many interconnected aspects of life. How we think can affect how we feel. Our emotions can influence our physical experiences, relationships and everyday choices. Our environment, culture, personal values and sense of belonging can shape how we understand ourselves and the world around us.
SAM reflects this whole-person perspective through six interconnected dimensions of wellbeing:
Emotional Wellbeing
Understanding our feelings. SAM encourages us to recognise, name and express emotions with curiosity and compassion. Every emotion can offer information about our experiences, needs and relationships.
Mental & Psychological Wellbeing
Understanding our minds. SAM celebrates curiosity, self-awareness, flexible thinking, learning and personal growth. Understanding our thoughts and experiences can help us explore different perspectives and make more informed choices.
Physical Wellbeing
Listening to our bodies. SAM reminds us that our bodies and minds are connected. Movement, rest, sleep, nourishment and physical comfort can all play a part in everyday wellbeing.
Social & Relational Wellbeing
Building meaningful connections. SAM values empathy, kindness, friendship, communication and respectful boundaries. Supportive relationships can help people experience connection and belonging.
Spiritual & Existential Wellbeing
Discovering meaning and values. SAM encourages reflection on what gives our lives meaning, purpose and hope. This dimension respects each person’s cultural identity, values and religious, spiritual or non-religious perspectives.
Environmental Wellbeing
Connecting with the world around us. SAM celebrates the places and environments that influence our everyday experiences. Time in nature, safe surroundings and opportunities for exploration and creativity may contribute to our sense of wellbeing.
These dimensions are not separate boxes or fixed categories. They interact differently throughout our lives, and each person’s needs, priorities and circumstances are unique.
Holistic wellbeing does not mean everything must be perfectly balanced. It means recognising the many parts of life that matter and responding to them with understanding and care.
The Meaning Behind SAM’s Design
SAM’s distinctive appearance tells a story about hearts, minds and human connection.
The Colourful Brain
Every Mind Is Unique: SAM’s pink brain-shaped head represents thinking, learning, imagination and psychological understanding. The seven colourful rays celebrate diversity, individuality and the many different ways people experience and engage with the world. The central green ray connects SAM visually with the green SHM outfit, bringing the character’s identity together.
The Heart-Shaped Leaves
Compassionate Care: Two green leaves embrace SAM’s brain, each featuring delicate heart-shaped veins. They symbolise nurturing, compassion, protection and care. The leaves remind us that psychological wellbeing does not exist in isolation. Understanding and supportive relationships can play an important role in how people experience life’s challenges.
The Feelings Wheel
Every Emotion Has a Place: SAM holds a colourful Feelings Wheel with different emotional expressions. This special tool encourages emotional awareness and opens conversations about feelings. SAM reminds us that happiness, sadness, anger, fear and other emotional experiences are part of being human. Rather than judging feelings as good or bad, we can learn to understand what they may be telling us and consider helpful ways to respond.
The Psychology Symbol
Curiosity About the Mind: The Greek letter Psi (Ψ), associated with psychology, is incorporated into SAM’s character design. It represents SHM’s connection with psychological understanding, reflection and mental health education.
Together, SAM’s visual elements communicate one message: Caring for the heart and understanding the mind are both important in supporting whole-person wellbeing.
SAM — A Compassionate Leader of the Brainbow Buddies
SAM is not a superhero who has all the answers. SAM is a friend who listens, cares, asks questions and learns alongside others.
As the leader of the Brainbow Buddies, SAM brings together eight distinctive friends: Ling, Mus, Bod, Inter, Spat, Nat, Log and Intra. Each friend brings different interests, abilities, perspectives and experiences.
Inspired by Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences, the characters celebrate human diversity and offer creative opportunities to explore different strengths and ways of engaging with the world.
SAM connects the group through emotional awareness, empathy, kindness, reflection and collaboration. Rather than expecting everyone to think, feel or behave in the same way, SAM encourages understanding and respect for differences. SAM leads with compassion, not authority.
Together, the Brainbow Buddies explore a simple but meaningful idea:
Different minds. Different strengths. One caring community.

“Hi, I’m SAM!
Did you know that our hearts, minds, bodies and relationships are all part of our wellbeing?
Sometimes we feel happy and confident. Sometimes we feel worried, tired, lonely or unsure. We all have different experiences, strengths and needs.
We can learn to listen to our feelings, care for our bodies, understand our thoughts, connect with others and discover what matters to us.
And we don’t have to figure everything out alone.
Together with my Brainbow Buddies, I’m here to explore, learn and grow with you.
So, how are you feeling today?”
Every person matters. Every feeling deserves understanding. Every part of wellbeing deserves care.
