THE ROLE OF PSYCHOLOGISTS IN HEALTH CARE: Mental Health Support for Patients with Cancer, Serious Chronic Illnesses, Palliative and End-of-Life Care
This workshop is designed to provide psychologists with advanced knowledge and skills to support patients dealing with serious illnesses, cancer, chronic conditions, and those in palliative or end-of-life care. It also offers strategies for healthcare professionals to manage stress and burnout, helping them maintain mental well-being while improving patient care quality.

Workshop Content: (6 sessions)
Session 1: Health and Illness (November 2, 2024)
Main topics:
• The biopsychosocial-spiritual model in health and illness
• Personality and professional behavior
• Health behavior change and health models
• The role of psychologists in interdisciplinary care for patients and healthcare workers
• Patient psychology
Session 2: Psychological Support for Cancer and Chronic Illness Patients (November 9, 2024)
Main topics:
• Psychological support for cancer patients
• Psychological care for patients with chronic diseases (kidney failure, stroke, heart failure, HIV, etc.)
• Psychological challenges for organ transplant patients
• Coping with life-threatening chronic illness and end-of-life stages
Session 3: Applying Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to Support Cancer Patients (November 16, 2024)
Main topics:
• Screening tools and questionnaires for psychological issues in cancer patients
• Applying DBT to manage pain, anger, anxiety, and stress in cancer and palliative care patients
Session 4: Life, Illness, Death, and Grief (November 23, 2024)
Main topics:
• Supporting grief and loss across different cultures and religions
• Understanding the death of children in Vietnamese culture
• How children and adolescents perceive death
• Grief and loss for adults
Session 5: The Role of Psychologists in Palliative and End-of-Life Care (November 30, 2024)

• Common psychological issues in palliative care patients: depression, anxiety, insomnia
• Psychological crises in terminally ill patients
• The role of psychologists in euthanasia and assisted dying
Session 6: Psychological Support for Healthcare Professionals (December 7, 2024)
Main topics:
• Breaking bad news: Communication skills for delivering difficult diagnoses
• Burnout: Identifying and addressing stress in healthcare professionals
• Compassion fatigue: Understanding and managing compassion fatigue
• Resilience and self-care: Developing skills for self-care and mental well-being
• Leading and participating in Balint Group supervision for healthcare workers to reduce work-related stress
Instructor: Clinical, Counsellor & Psychotherapist, Phuong Tran
With over 17 years of experience in providing psychological support and therapy to cancer and chronic illness patients, Uyen Phuong has worked at prestigious hospitals such as Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital, Werribee Mercy Hospital, Sunshine Hospital, and Royal Melbourne Hospital. She has completed shadowing programs in psychological support for cancer patients at Massachusetts General Hospital (USA) and a fellowship at St. Vincent’s Hospital (Australia). In addition to offering psychological care, she provides emotional and spiritual support to both patients and healthcare professionals, helping them navigate the emotional challenges of their work. Uyen Phuong is well-versed in CBT, EMDR, DBT, EFT, and SFBT, applying these methods to help patients overcome anxiety, depression, and manage pain and grief throughout their treatment.
Phuong holds a strong academic background with a Bachelor’s in Psychology specializing in Counseling, a Master’s in Clinical and Medical Psychology, and multiple certifications in Advanced Psychotherapy, Mental Health, and Palliative Care. She founded the non-profit program “Nang Cao Suc Manh Tinh Than” in Vietnam in 2007, providing psychological and spiritual support for cancer and chronic illness patients. She frequently returns to Vietnam to conduct training and present at professional conferences. She is also a member of PACFA, ACA, and a senior member of Spiritual Care Australia, offering clinical supervision in both Australia and Vietnam.

• Time: Every Saturday, from November 2, 2024, to December 7, 2024
• Duration: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM (Vietnam Time)
• Format: Online via Zoom
• Fee: 4,500,000 VND for the full course (7% discount for groups of 5; 10% discount for NCTT members)
• Fee per topic: 850,000 VND per session

Certification and Fees:
The course does not automatically provide certification. To receive certification, participants must:
• Attend all 6 sessions and be present for at least 80% of the time for each session
• Complete all in-class and take-home assignments
• Score at least 80% on the final assessment (certification only for those registered)
• Certification fee: 200,000 VND. Certification will be issued upon meeting the course criteria and completing the fee payment.
